LONDON CALLING Fall 2013 brings Cuneiform Records’ artists to the forefront in the UK, with multiple live shows by Cuneiform artists in England at the London Jazz Fest and at venues in Ireland; several new releases by such UK artists as Robert Wyatt and Chrome Hoof on Cuneiform; and a UK Music Video Award for a Cuneiform artist. This weekend, we are proud to announce that the London Jazz Festival is featuring two Cuneiform artists/ensembles, both from the USA:
Wadada Leo Smith, who presents the European Premier of the complete Suite of Ten Freedom Summers, performed by Wadada Leo Smith's Golden Quartet, The Ligeti Quartet and Video Artist Jesse Gilbert. (Cuneiform released Ten Freedom Summers as a 4-disc set in 2012 ) Thursday 21st November 2013 - First Collection: Defining Moments in America and
John Hollenbeck's Claudia Quintet, performing with the Royal Academy of Music Big Band Another Cuneiform artist, Pixel, a jazz/pop ensemble from Norway, was spotlit in the UK this month. Pixel took home the UK Music Video Award for Best Dance Video-Budget for their punchy anthem “Call Me” off their album Reminder (2012 Cuneiform). Cuneiform’s musical connections with the UK extend beyond its international artists being recognized on the UK stage this month. Dedicated to releasing cutting-edge music from around the world, Cuneiform began releasing recordings by UK jazz, rock, and electronic musicians only a few years after the label was founded. Its first album by a British artist came out in 1989: guitarist Phil Miller’s Cutting Both Ways. Since then, Cuneiform has released numerous recordings by UK artists. They include new music as well as archival recordings, by established avant-garde icons and by young rising stars.
Releases by UK Artists in 2013 In 2013 alone, Cuneiform released a number of widely acclaimed recordings by UK artists, including:
Robert Wyatt’s ’68 (2013), which features archival recordings Wyatt made after the Soft Machine/Jimi Hendrix Experience USA Tour, and which has received accolades from a number of sources including Rolling Stone online [genre: rock]
