BIRDSONGS OF THE MESOZOIC

Birdsongs will be performing at the Stone in NYC on Saturday, November 26 as part of Steve Feigenbaum's Cuneiform residency.

In August the improvisational loop-based side project B.MEZ (featuring members of Birdsongs with occasional guests) performed live music for a collection of early French and German surrealist and avant-garde shorts, including classic works by Hans Richter, Man Ray, and Marcel Duchamp.

Birdsongs' pianist Erik Lindgren recently composed a fanfare "50 Years Of Excellence" for flute, viola, and cello which will be performed by the Essex Chamber Music Players at Northern Essex Community College on October 23. http://www.ecmp.org/ Lindgren is also performing out with the duo Goli Music plus flutist Daniel Epstein and presenting a concert of original works, Birdsongs' selections, and standard repertoire at the Middleborough Public Library on September 17. http://www.golimusic.comhttp://www.midlib.org/

DEAD CAT BOUNCE
Dear DCB Faithful,

My, what an exciting time to be part of the DC Cat-illion! Our "little big band that could" is very busy this fall, most notably with the release of our fourth studio effort Chance Episodes on Cuneiform! We are very pleased with this new partnership with such a reputable jewel among the indie labels, and to maximize our efforts we have also partnered with Braithwaite & Katz Communications and New Crow Artist Management for our PR campaign.

Our first task after our September 27th release is to hit the midwestern states - familiar territory for us, where real people have come out to support real good music for years. Some highlights include Edgefest at Kerrytown Concert House in Ann Arbor, the Umbrella Series at Heaven Gallery in Chicago, and workshops/performances at major jazz programs at both UNI and U. Iowa. Full itinerary details are below.

We are interested also in extending our celebration by touring the Atlantic and Southern states this spring - and possibly beyond to the American West. To this end, we have initiated a Kickstarter campaign - complete with video trailer - that we hope you will enjoy, support with your donations, and spread word of to people you think will be interested. More information on this is below.

Chance Episodes was originally commissioned by Chamber Music America's New Works program, and edited in its final stages with help from American Music Center's CAP program. It celebrates "memory's haphazard way of bringing to the fore seemingly unrelated events, so that an episodic personal narrative is created, as if 'by chance'". We are very inspired by this material that is already road-tested, and will continue to grow as it is performed.

In addition to the CD release, DCB has been busy with another commission from American Composers Forum's Jerome Fund, for an altogether different work entitled Eco Beat Heresy. This work - now in development stages - is unique for DCB in two regards: first, it will be an electro-acoustic extended form piece that capitalizes on digital sound processing, of both live audio and field recorded data; and second, it is the first work whose creative process is documented in several stages and that relies on greater creative input from all the musicians involved. This concept is in part the result of doctoral research by bandleader Matt Steckler, and it hopes to shed new light on the lived experience of improvisers together engaged in an embodied group composition in a variety of play environments, both real and virtual. Documentation of this process is made public on our web sites (below) and blogs as it becomes available. Premiere of the full work is expected early 2012.

In other news from the band, Bill just had his second newborn - congrats Billiam! Jared commissioned Matt to write him a solo sax work for the Navy Sax Symposium in January '12. Charlie has been touring the world with many groups, while being mother to two twin cats Threadgill and Braxton. Dave has shared many insights on holistic health for animals and humans, and Terry is barnstorming with big bands while reveling in suburban life and working on his education degree. A well-rounded bunch indeed! We will be documenting this tour on video, so expect classic DCB hijinx in the post-tour phase...

Please take a moment if you haven't to drop a line, join the mail list, Like our FB page, follow us on Twitter, or express your Bounce-ness in as personal a way as you know. We want to hear from you!

Keep struttin',
Dead Cat Bounce

"What carries through each piece is Steckler's gift for rich voicings among four horn players... Dead Cat's music doesn't joke around." - Jazz Times

"For sheer snaggletoothed excitement [Dead Cat Bounce] is hard to beat." - Cadence

"A real group that is single minded and totally involved in the music." - Dave Liebman

"The writing offers enough variety to occasionally make you forget that all the music comes from these same six guys." - Chicago Reader

"DCB revels in a reed-driven sound marked by sharply contrasting forms, textures and tones... strident, joyful, lush and strutting use of a horn section." - Washington Post

Chance Episodes CD on Cuneiform drops 9/27/11!!

CARLO DE ROSA'S CROSS-FADE

This has been an amazing year for me so far. After the release of Carlo De Rosa's Cross-Fade - Brain Dance on Cuneiform Records this past January the album has received many great reviews both in the US and internationally including 4 stars from the London Financial Times! I have also been busy with various projects and performances.

The first exciting piece of news is the use of music from my album in an anti-fracking commercial: http://cleanwaternotdirtydrilling.org/
The video includes celebrities Zoë Saldana, Nadia Dajani, Mark Ruffalo, Josh Charles, Ethan Hawke and Amy Ryan. Check it out!

In late June I did some concerts with Rudresh Mahanthappa and Bunky Green's Apex band with Matt Mitchell and Damion Reid completing the rhythm section. We performed at the Montreal and Ottawa International Jazz Festivals and I was really thrilled when I read the following quote in a review of our Montreal concert: "De Rosa — whose Cuneiform debut, Brain Dance, was released earlier in 2011 and is clearly getting him some attention... his solos demonstrated both lithe dexterity and tangential thinking, finding ways to move out of the box while ultimately finding his way back in." - John Kelman, AllAboutJazz.com

The most recent performance with Cross-Fade was at Cornelia Street Café at the end of July and was a great success in part because of the fantastic NYTimes listing we received: "Carlo De Rosa’s Cross-Fade (Friday) As on his sharply dynamic recent album, “Brain Dance” (Cuneiform), Mr. De Rosa, a bassist, features his own complex music for an ensemble of fellow searchers: Mark Shim on tenor saxophone, Vijay Iyer on piano and Marcus Gilmore on drums." (Chinen)

Two albums released earlier this year that I played on include: Benjamin Drazen: Inner Flights (Posi-Tone) http://www.benjamindrazen.com/
NYJazz Initiative: Mad About Thad (Jazzheads) which recently received 4 stars in Downbeat magazine. http://www.nyjazz.org/index.html

I also played on Amir Elsaffar's latest album with the Two Rivers Ensemble: INANA (Pi Recordings) which will be released on October 25.
http://www.amirelsaffar.com/index.html

Those are some of the highlights of the past few months.

Upcoming events include a tour in late October with alto saxophonist David Bixler's Auction Project featuring Arturo O'Farill. Our 2010 ZOHO release was also awarded 4 stars in Downbeat. We'll be hitting the Mid-west including Cleveland, Ohio and Chicago, Illinois. http://www.davidbixler.com/live/

Cross-Fade also has a few performances this Fall including: Cornelia Street Café (NYC) on Saturday, November 19, the Cuneifest at An Die Musik Live! (Baltimore) on Sunday, November 20 and the Stone (NYC) on November 25. I'm hoping to add more Fall dates soon. Carlo De Rosa's Cross-Fade is looking for touring and gig possibilities worldwide.

All the best,

Carlo De Rosa

DOCTOR NERVE
Doctor Nerve returned from the Zappanale and More Festival in Bad Doberan Germany, where they played two shows and made tons of new friends. Sold all our merch including our glorious new t-shirts! Jammed during the final late night open stage with Ray White, Terence Hansen, members of Project Object, and many more cool musicians.  Was a great experience. THANKS to all our Kickstarter backers that made our travel possible! Thanks too, to MidAtlantic Arts for their generous support. Clips of our shows have begun to show up on YouTube, and have been posted on our Facebook Page. Or jump to our Zappanale playlist here: http://tinyurl.com/NerveZappa

Doctor Nerve's new Facebook page is most easily reached if you click the "Like" link at www.doctornerve.org, or search for "Doctor Nerve" on Facebook.

Nerve's looking forward to sharing an evening with Forever Einstein during Cuneiform week at The Stone, NYC, on November 29. See you there!

Nick's new metal band, Haessliche Luftmasken is also going to be playing the The Stone on Feb 29, as part of Pogus week. Check out videos of our premiere show at http://tinyurl.com/luftmasken

ERGO
Ergo has recently made a new recording titled "If Not Inertia", marking a new experiment in the band's sound with extensive use of live sampling, piano and prepared-piano for the first time, and featuring guest guitarists Mary Halvorson, Sebastian Kruger (of the indie band Inlets).  Ergo's new pianist/keyboardist Sam Harris has been touring extensively with trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, so the band will perform at the Stone for the Cuneiform festival on November 27th with special guest Jason Moran.  Trombonist, laptopist and leader Brett Sroka attended an artist residency at I-Park Foundation in Connecticut and has begun working on a new series of compositions. They are seeking performance opportunities in Europe for spring 2012.  Please join us on facebook and twitter for regular posts about our varied musical interests.

FORGAS BAND PHENOMENA
New CD/DVD "Acte V" (their fifth) due for release on Cuneiform Records in January 2012. Check the label's website and our MySpace page for samples / clips to be added soon. The band, celebrating their fourth year with the same line-up, went into the studio last Spring to record its new studio CD, comprising six new compositions by drummer/bandleader Patrick Forgas. Next in the schedule was the editing and mixing of the band's performance at NEARfest 2010 for the accompanying DVD, which will be 75 minutes long and include tracks from FBP's various CDs, including the title track from 1999's now-oop "Extra-Lucide" and versions of 2 tracks on the new CD. The release of "Acte V" will coincide with the band's long-delayed return to the stage, with an "album release" gig in Paris in January (venue and date tbc) and hopefully many more live appearances to follow. Offers welcome, particularly at prog/jazz festivals.

GUTBUCKET
We had a phenomenal show at the Paris Jazz Festival on July 9. We had two great shows at the BLAZE Festival in London (at the Barbican Freestage and then at Vortex Jazzclub) on July 7 and 9 as well. We also had a lovely, intimate show in Great Barrington, MA at the Berkshire Fringe Festival on August 10.

We will be on tour in Europe in November (definitely still looking for shows across the pond) as we continue to showcase material from our February release "Flock" as well as some brand new compositions.

We will also be performing on November 30 at the Stone in NYC as part of a celebration that month of Cuneiform Records artists curated by our very own Steve Feigenbaum.

Continue to check our tour food blog "Gut Consumption" at http://gutconsumption.blogspot.com/ for periodic updates on what we eat and think about what we eat as we travel the world. It's about more than just food...although that would be enough, right?

THE MICROSCOPIC SEPTET
During late August and early September of 2011, The Microscopic Septet assembled once again, for successful gigs at An Die Muzik in Baltimore (in spire of the hurricane) and the Gershwin Hotel in New York. In addition Joel Forrester & Phillip Johnston celebrated the release of their duo CD "Live At The Hillside" (Asynchronous 002, distributed by Wayside Music) at the wonderfully hip and intimate Barbes in Brooklyn, together with Johnston's collaboration with clarinettist Andy Biskin, and trombonist Curtis Hasselbring. That group is called The Spokes, and their debut CD is "Not So Fast" (Strudelmedia, also distributed by Wayside). Both gigs were packed, and a good time was had by all.

About the "Live At The Hillside", Jim Macnie in the Village Voice wrote, "After what seems like a gillion years together, pianist Forrester and saxophonist Johnston have fashioned a rare rapport, and their new duet disc...teems with a well-rendered wit and flows with fraternal accord." he described The Spokes as "pretty and provocative at the same time." The New York Times gave the gig a pick and described the Micros as "reliably puckish..."

Both the Microscopic Septet, and Joel Forrester/Phillip Johnston Duo plan to be touring in the US and Europe in 2012.

ED PALERMO BIG BAND
The Ed Palermo Big Band is doing a 3 night stint at Iridium in NYC, October 5, 6 and 7. It will feature ex-Zappa bandmates Napoleon Murphy Brock and Mike Keneally.

And they are currently working on a new CD of Zappa material.

POSITIVE CATASTROPHE
In addition to the Cuneiform Stone gig and Baltimore festival, Positive Catastrophe is also doing a New Haven hit at the Big Room on Nov 19. http://thebigroomnewhaven.com/

All these gigs are in preparation for recording our second album for Cuneiform, slated for May '12 release.

REVOLUTIONARY SNAKE ENSEMBLE

Revolutionary News  -  September 2011

RSE leader Ken Field has been working with Mortal Music honcho Andy Pinkham to mix the live tracks from an extraordinary edition of the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble that invaded New York City last May.  The group featured drummer Kenny Wollesen (Bill Frisell/John Zorn/Tom Waits) and trombonist Josh Roseman (Dave Douglas/Steve Coleman/Don Byron/Lester Bowie), along with New York and Boston stalwarts Joey Lefitz/drums, Alex Smith/electric bass, Blake Newman/acoustic bass, Danny Heath/trombone, Alex Asher/trombone, Ken Field/alto sax, and Jerry Sabatini/trumpet.

The recordings included great performances at WNYC radio, at John Zorn's lower east side listening room The Stone, and at Brooklyn's 58North6 Media Labs.  (Sadly, a slamming set at Barbes was not recorded.)  So far the mixes are sounding quite incredible, and we look forward to sharing them with the world!!

RSE returns to NYC for an encore performance at The Stone on Thursday, November 17th, 2011 as part of the Cuneiform Records series there.

The Stone, Avenue C & 2nd Street, NYC, 8-9:15pm, $10.  thestonenyc.com

THINKING PLAGUE
We reported in June that the new TP cd, "Decline and Fall", would be released in September.  …We lied.  Due to some schedule problems the mixing had be postponed to October, at which time Mike Johnson will be in France to mix the cd with Bob Drake at Maison Isolé Studios.   Thus Cuneiform will release the cd in January.  Believe us, though, when we say that, based on some preliminary mixes we've heard, it will have been worth the wait.  To reiterate from the last 'news', this cd will quite hard-edged, very much avant *rock*, complexly melodic and song-like, with great sound - a real Johnson-Drake composition & mixing/production "opus".

TP was recently invited by the producers of "Romantic Warriors", the prog music documentary, to be featured in "Part 2" of the 'series', which focuses on 'avant prog' (aka RIO, etc.).  In August hey came to Colorado to interview members and video tape some rehearsal performances.  They plan to video TP performing at the Cuneifest and elsewhere in November.  TP is one of a handful of bands that are being especially featured in the documentary, which is expected to be out in 2013.

This fall Thinking Plague (and Hamster Theatre, which share 3 members) will do a short series of concerts as follows (links may require right-click):

Sat October 29Mercury Café
2199 California St.
Denver, CO  80205

Sat November 19 - Cuneifest 2011 - Orion Sound Studios
2903 Whittington Ave., Suite C
Baltimore, MD. 21230

Sun November 20 - PhilaMOCA: Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art   Click here to purchase advanced tickets
531 N 12th Street
Philadelphia, PA 19123

Mon November 21 - "An Evening with Thinking Plague and Hamster Theatre"
(part-interactive discussion and part "living room concert")
Trevose, PA  (just outside Philadelphia - details will be available after September 12)

Tues November 22 - The Stone
16 Avenue C (the corner of Avenue C and Second Street)
NYC, NY 10009

The live band will feature the following line-up:
      Elaine Di Falco - vocals
      Kimara Sajn - keys
      Robin Chestnut - drums
      Dave Willey - bass
      Mark Harris - reeds
   Mike Johnson - guitar

Please note that the show on Nov. 23 at the Magic Room in Brighton, MA has been CANCELLED due to venue issues.

This fall Italy's Altrock label will release a beautiful new CD, entitled "Immeasurable Currents", by longtime TP bassist Dave Willey "and friends" - which include the late Hugh Hopper, TP bandmates Elaine Di Falco, Mike Johnson, Deborah Perry handles, Dave Kerman, and Mark Harris, as well as Wally Scharold of miRthkon.
