BIRDSONGS OF THE MESOZOIC
Notes from the Mesozoic: September 2012
Birdsongs at ProgDay
After a performance hiatus, Birdsongs was honored to headline the opening day of the 18th edition of ProgDay, the world's longest running progressive music festival. For this performance, over Labor Day weekend 2012 in Chapel Hill, NC, Birdsongs played for almost 2 hours, and featured a broad range of selections drawn from the entire 32 year history of the group. The set also included brand new unrecorded material.
A special highlight of the afternoon occurred when Birdsongs saxophonist Ken Field sat in with the incredible Italian prog group Accordo dei Contrari on an improvised solo at the end of their set.
Individual News
Birdsongs pianist Erik Lindgren recently completed the orchestration for his extended work "Extreme Spirituals." This 25-minute suite includes orchestral treatments of four spirituals that were originally arranged for Birdsongs' unique and critically-acclaimed collaboration with African-American vocalist Oral Moses, which culminated in the 2006 Cuneiform release of the same name. The extended work will premiere on October 13 with a performance in Atlanta by Mr. Moses fronting the Georgia Symphony Orchestra. Birdsongs saxophonist Ken Field will make a guest appearance. Additional information can be found at http://georgiasymphony.org
Berklee College of Music in Boston has named electronic musician, composer, sound designer, and Birdsongs guitarist Michael Bierylo as chair of the college's Electronic Production and Design (EPD) Department. According to Berklee, Bierylo intends in his new role to "embrace advances in video game design, software development, and all aspects of computer music and video performance." The EPD Department (formerly Music Synthesis) focuses on the musical and creative use of electronic production and sound design tools and technologies.
The DeTao Masters Academy, based in Beijing and Shanghai, China, has enlisted Birdsongs saxophonist Ken Field as a DeTao Master in the areas of Music Performance and Soundtrack Design. Field traveled to China in August for initial meetings with DeTao staff. He will continue to be based in Boston, but will travel to China periodically to organize and direct his DeTao teaching studio there.

DOCTOR NERVE
Doctor Nerve performed at ProgDay on Sept 2, 2012. We turned in a 90 minute set covering a huge range of music from our 30 year legacy.
There was a great vibe at ProgDay; made a lot of new friends, and met some old ones, too. And we even scrambled together a new EP for ProgDay sales, containing four unreleased studio recordings, which along with our magnificent t-shirts, sold briskly.
Some videos are showing up, which you can see at http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLM1yNV5kjObsGS4DHlXCtVFYgpyGzcwPM.
Nick's son Leo's band Diabolicus recently performed on Jesse Krakow's (Doctor Nerve, Haessliche Luftmasken, Fast 'n' Bulbous) "Minor Music" show on WFMU.
Featuring music performed by people under 18 years of age, Minor Music is a steller showcase of young talent.

Häßliche Luftmasken at Experi-MENTAL Festival Sat Oct 6!
That's Nick's metal band with the uncanny Josh Lopes (gtr), the incisive Jesse Krakow (bass), and the fearless Jon Lango (drums). We are beyond psyched to welcome Jon Lango onto the drum throne, as he is a brutal and vicious human being with great skill, determination, and yes, ultimate strength.
The 4th edition of the Experi-MENTAL Festival will be held on October 5, 6 and 7, 2012. The Experi-MENTAL Festival 4 will be a three-day music festival concentrating on creative and experimental music performance of all genres and artistic disciplines. The festival is run by the Brooklyn based experimental audio/video project PAS and Alrealon Musique.

Ergo drummer Shawn Baltazor has also been working with Darcy James Argue's big band and has recently embarked on a new collaboration with Kermit Driscoll called Green Screen. Ergo's leader, trombonist/laptopist Brett Sroka just returned from his second fellowship at the I-Park Foundation in Connecticut and this spring will be a resident at the Nida Arts Colony in Lithuania. In October he will score Sohrab Pirayesh's documentary "The Jerusalem Problem", and will also release the debut record of Cherubim, a new drone/noise duo with guitarist Yuko Pepe. Sroka is also developing a Max/MSP performance/generative sound installation with with pianist Carl Maguire, flutist Kaoru Watanabe, entitled "Sine Qua Non". Janel and Anthony join in an ensemble playing Satie's Furniture Music
We were very excited to have had the opportunity to do an east coast tour this past June to support our new Cuneiform release Where Is Home. That tour was kicked off with a show at NYC's Issue Project Room which featured the music of pedal steelist, Susan Alcorn. Janel arranged seven of Susan's original compositions and curated the ensemble which included Eyvind Kang (viola), Skuli Sverrison (bass, electronics), Jessika Kenny (vocals), Doug Wesselman (clarinet), Anthony Pirog (guitar) and Janel Leppin (cello, cello sympathetique). The night was incredible begun with a solo set by the legendary Susan Alcorn and finished with the ensemble.
We just finished touring in the Seattle/Olympia area a few weeks ago and had the opportunity to do an hour long live set for KEXP's show Sonarchy. That will air on Sonarchy's webcast this November.
Janel has been working on a solo record at The Brink analog studio in Centreville, VA that she plans on putting finishing touches on in November with engineer Randall Dunn in Seattle, WA. Anthony has plans to record a trio record at The Brink around the new year.
October 11 - An Die Musik - 409 North Charles Street - Baltimore, MD 21201 This will be Janel's first presentation of her recently recorded solo work opening for Liz Meredith's cd release party. Liz Meredith (viola, electronics); Janel Leppin (cello, electronics)

MIRIODOR
Miriodor is scheduled for a new release in September 2013, one year from now, On Cuneiform Records. We're about halfway thru our compositional and recording process. No title yet. There will surely be a few guests on this next album.
We are continuing our adventure as a trio (again), Rémi Leclerc, Bernard Falaise and Pascal Globensky. It has not been an easy decision to go without Nicolas Masino, our bassman and keyboard player for the last 15 years. But we have to keep going.
The artwork for the next album (which may be multi-formats) will be done by Marc Tessier, our long-time friend and photographer. He's the one who did the cover for our Live 89.
That's it for now. More in the next newsletter.

Pixel are making their first music video for the tune "Call Me". The video will be released during Fall 2012.
In June Pixel played at the "Match & Fuse" festival in London. Downbeat magazine describes Pixel
"Another bassist who excelled at the fest was Ellen Andrea Wang, who fronted the promising Norwegian band Pixel on the outdoor Gillett Square stage. The group’s chromatic runs on the snarling tune “Call Me” gave Wang an opportunity to pull off one of the most memorable moments of the weekend."
Pixel also played at Oslo Jazzfestival in august were Ellen Andrea Wang got the prestigious award Statkraft Young Star.

Festival website: http://www.rocktime.org/rio/index.php/en/ We will have a guest keyboardist, Kurt Rongey, mastermind and ace keyboardist behind the amazing band, Underground Railroad. Also, in addition to her lead vocal parts, our amazingly talented vocalist, Elaine di Falco, will be simultaneously singing her own backing vocal parts, using a midi keyboard and a 'new-fangled' digital gizmo that recreates her voice at the pitches she plays on the keys. At times she's responsible for producing up to three different vocal parts at once! This is a very difficult task, particularly in Thinking Plague music, where voices tend to move very independently. But Elaine has mastered it in recent months, and has used it effectively on stage. Meanwhile, there will also be a "cameo" appearance by a certain "local celebrity" from southern France. ;^)
Recent Show - Mercury Café: Kimara Sajn, who played drums and keys on our latest CD, Decline and Fall, was not able to be with Thinking Plague to rehearse for, and perform at the RIO Festival next month (Kim has been playing keys with us for live shows). Thus, we had to invite a "guest keyboardist", and we needed a warm-up show so that he, Kurt, could be "broken in" (pardon the expression - :-D). So we did a show at Denver's legendary Mercury Café on Aug. 22nd. It was to have taken place at another venue, Moe's, with Oakland's miRthkon as headliner - we were contacted by Wally Scharold early in summer about setting up a show with us, and we were happy to be the 'local opener' for them. But, as some will know, Wally got ill on their tour, somewhere around Chicago?, and ended up in the ER there. The result was that miRthkon were forced to cancel the rest of their tour, and the organizer at Moe's got cold feet, as it were, despite TP's long history and reputation, and perhaps because of our being Colorado-based! Nevertheless, through a quick series of small miracles the day before our show, we were able to move to an much nicer, bigger, better-sounding and frankly friendlier venue - the Mercury Café, at which TP has performed from time to time since 1982.
Long-story not quite so long, we had a great show! Someone did shoot video, and we're trying to obtain a copy. If the sound is not too hideous, we *may* post something on YouTube. Meanwhile, Kurt did a fine job, using an acoustic grand piano and a Kurzweil synth (sadly, we're having to use a digital piano at RIO). Also, we have a 'cameo' appearance by Bill Pohl, amazing lead guitarist from Underground Railroad, which led to a thoroughly "avant" improvised guitar duet by Bill and Mike Johnson. The two are talking about some kind of collaboration...??
Other Projects/Bands:
Hamster Theatre: Our other "sister" band, Hamster Theatre has been in hibernation, primarily due to a lingering gap in the bass guitar position (not to mention a lot of rehearsing with Thinking Plague!). Fortunately, it appears that this job has finally (again) been filled, and the Hamsters will hopefully emerge again soon. We have plans to complete a CD by summer or thereabouts.
Three Mice: This is a side project with TP's Dave Willey and Elaine di Falco teamed up with L'Ensemble Raye´s Cedric Vuille. Their first CD project, "Send Me a Postcard", is getting great reviews <http://www.allmusic.com/album/send-me-a-postcard-mw0002316319>, and they are beginning to strategize for another CD.
Dave Willey and Friends: This is another of Dave Willey's projects that recently released a CD entitled "Immeasurable Currents" on the Altrock label. The CD, which features several current and previous TP members, is also getting excellent reviews <http://www.dprp.net/reviews/201160.php#willey>.
Upcoming Projects:
Ligeia Mare*: This is a wonderful free improv ensemble featuring Dave Willey (again!), Elaine di Falco, Mark Harris, and others, that had a recent performance mixed by Udi Koomran - excerpt http://soundcloud.com/udi-koomran/legeia-mare-1. At present they are seeking a means of releasing a CD.
Udi Koomran and Mike Johnson: These two have been tinkering with an idea for a long-distance semi-composed, semi-improvised ambient or 'soundscape'-oriented project. This will involve each person creating some kind of tracks of audio, either composed, improvised, using instruments or 'created' with software, electronics, etc. These then they send to the other person, who creates more tracks in response to what he hears, possibly processing or "treating" the other person's tracks. He then sends it all back to the originator. The process is repeated until they have what they want. Very interesting, AND intended by the collaborators to NOT be merely a lot of directionless sonic textures, but rather to employ real musical and sonic thematic material to create a new expressive musical hybrid. Stay tuned.
